Wed, 28 November 2007 After listening to the recording, I've decided not to put-up the second half of my interview/talk with Paul Dykman. Somehow a part of the conversation was not recorded, so I can't really finish the thing. Yet, Paul will return to the podcast, so maybe we'll talk crazy. Thu, 22 November 2007 That's right: I'm dropping this on Thanksgiving! On this week's episode I interview my friend Paul Dykman (pictured right (he's the caucasian dude in the front.)) Paul and I talk about what he does for a living (teaching English-as-a-Second-Language in Los Angeles) and the inherent cultural issues that come along with that profession. Also, check back for the crazy 2nd part of this interview (the 'b-side' podcast,) which will be posted after the Thanksgiving weekend. Fri, 16 November 2007 A special, extra-short* Manifesto episode.
By myself, I explain the sub-title of this podcast (a 'culture' podcast.) I also talk about philosophical psycho-killers in the movies, make a correction, and discuss a recent life-event. Enjoy! *Approx. 15 minutes. Tags: Podcasts, Culture, manifesto, No Country For Old Men Comments[0] |
Mon, 12 November 2007 The next episode will take a little longer because I'm awaiting some important medical-test results. Because I'm mentally pre-occupied, I really can't focus on making a podcast.
I hope you understand. Category: general -- posted at: 1:36 AM Comments[0] |
Mon, 5 November 2007 ![]() MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC! On this episode, I introduce the Beautiful Music segment... ...and I talk at-length about the indie-music act EL PERRO DEL MAR, a.k.a. Sarah Assbring (pictured.) 'I Can't Talk About It,' 'God Knows (You Gotta Give to Get)', 'Party', and 'Hello, Goodbye' used with permission from the artist. Tue, 30 October 2007 I've been listed/acknowledged on the blogs for two of my favorite podcasts, FILMSPOTTING and WATCHING THE DIRECTORS: www.filmspotting.net (look under the heading of 'Listener Shows/Sites.') www.watchingthedirectors.com (read their most recent posting and look under the heading of 'Listener Links.') So my grassroots methods are somewhat taking hold. If you haven't checked out either one of these two podcasts, I recommend that you do. They're very well-done, informative programs about everything cinematic. Also-- the next episode of For Lack of a Better Word will inaugurate my 'Beautiful Music' Segment (quotation marks included.) It will feature me culling songs my dad's 'Beautiful Music' collection, a series of mixtapes which he has been making for more than 40 (!) years. (That's right-- my pops was a mix-tape pioneer.) Yet, as much as this segment will be about the songs it will also be about my feelings about the 'Beautiful Music' collection, which through out my life I have heard plenty of. There are plenty of good songs as well as plenty of oddities on these tapes. J Category: general -- posted at: 1:43 PM Comments[0] |
Wed, 24 October 2007 Once again, Alexis Adkins joins me on this edition of For Lack
of a Better Word. On this podcast, we review two films that we saw at
the 30th Mill Valley Film Festival in Marin County, California (which
incidental to recent production delays has ended.) What are the films? CHICAGO 10 (2007, dir. Brett Morgan)
I'M NOT THERE (2007, dir. Todd Haynes) Special Thanks to BEAN STREET COFFEE Songs: 'David Watts' by The Jam (unfortunately I don't have the original version by The Kinks, which is better) and 'You're Ain't Goin' Nowhere' by The Byrds. Mon, 15 October 2007 For an excellent guide to IN RAINBOWS, click here: Pitchfork Media's Guide to Radiohead's In Rainbows Also, a correction: I improperly sequenced my download copy of IN RAINBOWS. I made the last song "All I Need," when in reality it should be "Videotape." So, when I say on the podcast that the last song is a stand-out, no, I am not contradicting my earlier statement that "Videotape" was unimpressive because I didn't know "Videotape" was the real last song. (I could also correct the many grammatical errors in my speech, but I don't have all day, you know?) Lastly: the picture on the right is definitely Radiohead-esque to me, but it also suggests a possible alternate version of the movie CHILDREN OF MEN that stars a lovable, cartoon dog and not scruffy Clive Owen. Food for thought. Tags: Podcasts, Culture, Radiohead, In Rainbows |

Sat, 13 October 2007 I'm going to have to send my computer in for repairs, and I don't know how long it will be in. So, if you're paying attention, it might take awhile for a new episode. It all depends on how much my bro will let me use his computer in the meantime. Other than that, I've been struggling to back-up my computer but I haven't found an effective way to do so. Ugh... Thu, 11 October 2007 ...either the MP3 file I uploaded is corrupted (which I doubt) or there's a problem at the Liberated Syndication server (which wouldn't surprise me.) Apparently, the MP3 file never received a mime-type, but I really don't know how I couldn't have uploaded a MP3 without a mime-type when I didn't know what a mime-type was in the first place.
Anyway, I'm sure that LibSyn are on top of this. If I were to pick a term that would describe this week for me, it would be 'technical difficulties.' My laptop display screen is going haywire, the RSS MP3 for episode 5 is being anything but 'really simple,' and it was a struggle to get that Radiohead album downloaded. For now, I hope you enjoy this picture of me looking like a drunk gnome. Category: podcasts -- posted at: 1:49 PM Comments[0] |

Wed, 26 September 2007 It will be irregular, with a podcast being posted every 7 to 10 days, 2 weeks at the most.
Also, as you may have noticed, I added a sub-title to the title of For Lack of a Better Word. I'm flirting with the idea of giving the podcast a broader focus that can include both the micro and the macro, the private and the social, in one.
I just returned from a 'getaway' and hopefully I'll have a new episode posted by Thursday or Friday.
Stay tuned!
And you know that Chris Cocker, "Leave Brittney Alone" video? Why doesn't anybody get that it's a joke? I guess people's sense of humor is being over-ridden with their homophobia. Category: general -- posted at: 2:34 AM Comments[0] |

Thu, 6 September 2007 Ever since ten years ago, when he materialized out of thin-air, a semi-feral cat named Scully has lived around Fort Damer.* --In a non-sexual sense-- Scully** was a skanky cat, and because we liked the guy, we Damers would give him food and love whenever he demanded it.
Well, unfortunately, Scully has moved on to greener pastures: earlier today he was put to sleep by a veterinarian. His kidneys were failing and he only had a couple of days to live. I wasn't at Fort Damer when he departed, but I just drove into the place's driveway and thought, 'I'm never going to see Scully waiting here again.' It was a sad thought that reminds me of a painful truth-- whenever a pet you care about dies, it'll always be an end to an era.
Goodnight, sweet Scully.
*My nickname for my parents' house.
**Yes, we named Scully after the charcter on THE X-FILES. And yes-- we are sure he was a dude.
P.S. I'm working on Podcast #2, but I've been preoccupied with this and other duties. Hopefully, I'll have it ready soon. Category: general -- posted at: 9:18 PM Comments[0] |
